This upgrade to North Lakes State College’s special education playspace was designed with a strong focus on inclusion, sensory engagement and accessibility. The brief called for play opportunities that would suit a diverse student cohort, supporting physical development, creativity and self-directed exploration in a safe and welcoming environment.

Project Overview
Working closely with QBuild and the Queensland Department of Education, PARX delivered a compact but thoughtful play space tailored for students of all abilities. The focus was on creating a safe, engaging environment that supports a range of play styles including active, social and sensory.
At the heart of the space is the Kingswood play system, offering age-appropriate climbing, deck-based play and opportunities for imaginative interaction. With multiple access points and graduated challenges, it supports gross motor development while keeping things approachable and fun.
A single bay swing includes an inclusive seat, ensuring that students with diverse physical needs can participate alongside their peers. The addition of a musical play panel provides a sensory-rich experience that invites exploration and creative expression.
The Finished Space
With an open, inviting atmosphere, the play space at North Lakes State College is designed to give every student something to engage with—whether that’s physical movement, musical interaction or simply time outdoors. The layout supports easy supervision and encourages inclusive, low-pressure play that fits naturally into the school day.
Soft landscaping elements and circulation space help create a calm, open feel—reinforcing the site’s purpose as a welcoming, safe place to learn through play.
