Risky Play: Why Challenge Matters in Great Playground Design

Children are wired for adventure. They climb, stretch, leap and test boundaries not because they want danger, but because they’re learning what they’re capable of. In a world where an overabundance of caution and safety ‘rules’ dominate decision-making, opportunities for true developmental play can sometimes get lost.

Risky play, the sort that brings challenge, uncertainty and excitement, is not reckless; it’s vital. When children engage with manageable risk, they demonstrate greater resilience, improve motor skills and hazard-assessment abilities, and learn to manage fear while building confidence through success.

A landmark review published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found that children given opportunities for adventurous play—with age-appropriate, healthy risk-taking—demonstrate improved physical activity, social skills and mental wellbeing. Similarly, recent insights published in the Clinical Child and Family Psychology Review build the case for a relationship between challenge-rich play, improved confidence and a reduced risk of future anxiety, further highlighting the importance of designing play environments that intentionally support safe, confidence-building challenge.

What is Risky Play?

Risky play includes activities such as:

  • climbing to heights
  • balancing on moving or flexible surfaces
  • negotiating speed (like sliding or spinning)
  • exploring new spaces independently
  • navigating natural elements such as rocks, water and slopes.

Risky play is not about danger; it’s about opportunity. A well-planned, thoughtfully designed playspace allows play, and therefore child development, to flourish in a way that is safe but not restrictive.

The Problem With Eliminating All Risk

Over time, increasingly cautious design results in play environments where children stop learning how to identify hazards and manage risk for themselves. Not only this, but overly ‘safe’ design has implications for physical development too.

For example, features like monkey bars and overhead climbing frames—important for developing upper-body strength, grip and coordination—have, in recent years, been removed or heavily modified in playgrounds in favour of lower-risk play. When these challenges disappear, so do the chances to build physical strength and confidence, and fear can become a default response rather than a skill children learn to navigate.

The biggest argument for eliminating risk is to reduce injury. However, most injuries from risky play are minor, and children are statistically less likely to get hurt in unstructured outdoor play than in organised sports. Injury data shared by the Canadian Paediatric Society shows activities like tree climbing produce far fewer incidents than soccer, cycling or skateboarding—and fatalities linked to outdoor play are extremely rare.

When we remove all risk, we unintentionally create something far worse; we create boredom, under-developed capabilities and reduced self-agency in an ever-changing world. Some experts also note that when playgrounds become too low or unchallenging, children may take risks the equipment wasn’t designed for, actually increasing the likelihood of injury.

Designing Safe Spaces for Risky Play

Great playground designers work in a careful balance to create spaces that promote healthy challenge, allow real choices and keep calculated hazards mitigated but not erased.

This risk-benefit approach aligns with Australian Standards AS 4685, recognising that environments for children’s play must manage risk and support developmental value. Finding this balance is critical for supporting children’s growth and long-term wellbeing.

When a child chooses the wobbly bridge over the stable path…

When they climb a little higher than yesterday…

They’re not just playing. They’re testing courage, thinking critically, problem-solving, collaborating and learning who they are. These are capabilities they take into life to rise to challenges and confidently navigate new environments.

Tips for Playspace Designers

1. Offer Graduated Levels of Challenge

Studies show that confidence grows when children can progress in small steps (e.g. low → medium → higher challenge). Consider tiered heights, increasingly complex movement paths or scalable routes on the same structure.

2. Prioritise Perceived Risk Over Actual Danger

Children benefit most from situations that feel challenging but are structurally safe. This can be achieved with wobbly bridges, nets, angled poles, suspended elements or optics of height without real fall severity.

3. Build in Choice-Rich Elements

Children learn to assess risk when they can choose between options with different levels of challenge. For example, multiple routes up a tower, branching climbers, varied surfacing textures or alternative entry/exit points.

4. Use Forgiving Materials that Support Real Movement

Natural and dynamic materials enable safe risk-taking. Use nets, ropes, timber, rubber, sand, mulch—materials that move with the child—rather than rigid steel only.

5. Focus on Play Complexity, Not Just Height

Research shows that complex movement patterns (balancing, hanging, twisting, problem-solving routes) provide important developmental value. This can be achieved through irregular geometry, angled beams, climb-through spaces or movement paths that invite children to move in varied and unexpected ways.

6. Allow for Calculated Fall Zones

Falls are part of healthy risk; serious harm is prevented through well-considered surfacing and clear fall envelopes (AS 4685). It’s critical to ensure appropriate surfacing depth, unobstructed fall zones and correct free-fall heights matched to challenge.

7. Design for Social Challenge, Not Just Physical

Negotiating risk alongside peers builds collaboration, communication and conflict-resolution. Consider shared nets, group spinners, cooperative climbing routes and multi-user challenges.

8. Use Layout to Encourage Self-Regulation

Children judge risk better when the environment cues appropriate behaviour. For example, providing quieter entry points into complex zones, sightlines for choice-making and progression from ‘easy’ to ‘hard’ within a single play experience.

9. Make Space for Real Movement

Studies warns that when equipment becomes too low, fixed or ”plasticised,’ children seek excitement in unintended ways. Instead incorporate dynamic, responsive movement options (ropes, swings, bridges), varied elevations and intentionally challenging but predictable forms.

10. Support Interoceptive and Proprioceptive Feedback

Neuroscience shows children need whole-body sensory input to develop judgment and confidence. Ensure opportunities exist for climbing, hanging, rolling, spinning, pulling and pushing—not just standing and sliding.
