Big Play for a Growing School Community
Part of a $85 million investment in new schools across Ipswich, Woogaroo Creek State School (formerly Augustine Heights State School) opened its doors in early 2023—serving one of South-East Queensland’s fastest-growing regions. Mid-year, students were welcomed into a brand-new play space purpose-built for the junior years.

Project Overview
The brief was clear: design a large, dynamic play space that integrated seamlessly with the site’s natural topography. The vision was to create a tiered amphitheatre-style layout that encouraged active play, movement and social connection—complete with shade, seating and standout features for all abilities.
Working in collaboration with JFP Urban Consultants, the Queensland Department of Education and feedback from Foundation Principal Kendall Seccombe, the PARX team delivered a layered, high-impact playscape that brings energy and identity to the heart of the school.

The Finished Space
Perched above the amphitheatre seating, the playground unfolds across levels with embankment access points and varied tactile softfall zones. A 1m-wide stainless steel slide lets students race their peers to the bottom, while climbing grips and rope trails offer a challenging return to the top.
At the centre is the Frontiers Horizon, a bold stainless steel play unit designed for climbing, crossing and chill-out time. With features like a fireman pole, hangout hammock, dome climber and spinner, it’s packed with play opportunities and built to endure.
Complementing this is the Rustik Narkoola, a linear hardwood adventure system with three unique bays of nature-inspired elements. Kids can move at their own pace across swinging pommels, wobbly bridges and rolling logs, developing strength, balance and coordination through self-directed play.
Scattered throughout the space, rubber domes encourage imaginative play—perfect for games of “the ground is lava,” balance challenges or social hangouts. Around the perimeter, soft landscaping wraps the space and connects it to a nearby open kickabout area that’s already become a favourite among students.
