Adventure Play with a Coastal Edge

Located in the heart of the Sunshine Coast, overlooking the shores of Lake Kawana, Birtinya Play was designed to offer more than just a play space. A coastal destination that invites exploration, movement and social connection, this adventure playground is just minutes from the beach and bustling shopping precinct.

Built to endure the harsh foreshore environment, the design balances architectural impact with long-term durability, delivering an adventure-based space that speaks to older children and inclusive community use alike.

Details

Location: Birtinya, QLD

Client: Stockland; Delivered in collaboration with AECOM and Eureka Landscapes

Project Type: Adventure Play Space

Scope: Foreshore community development

Equipment Budget: $99k

Project Overview

Stockland’s vision for the Birtinya development was to create a striking, low-maintenance recreational space that would meet the needs of an active, growing community. With its proximity to the water and high-exposure location, every material had to be selected with performance and corrosion-resistance in mind.

The result is a bold, high-energy space anchored by the St Louis sky tower—a sculptural, stainless steel structure that offers physical challenge and multi-level play for children aged 5–12. Complemented by free-standing play elements like the Air Rider and Board Rider, children are encouraged to test their skills in balance, coordination and courage. Stainless steel framing and durable CGL panels ensure the whole space is fit for coastal conditions and high-frequency use.

The Finished Space

From climbing walls and ladders to an epic 2.8m tube slide, the St Louis system is the centrepiece of a compact but high-impact layout. The lower level offers accessible play for younger users, while the adjacent Inclusive Orbit carousel provides high-speed fun for children of all abilities.

Play is integrated with the natural landscape, using embankment climbs and graded access to bring variety and texture to the experience. Custom rubber surfacing, in bold blue and orange, mirrors the shape and colour of the shade sails overhead—creating a vibrant and cohesive visual language across the site.
